Waxhaw was chartered in 1889, which makes it the third oldest town in Union County. Main Street is restored brick storefronts holding independent restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, and the railroad runs straight through the center of it. The Waxhaw Overhead Bridge, once an automobile crossing and now pedestrian only, connects North Main to South Main, and people genuinely stand on it waiting for a train to pass beneath. The whole district went on the National Register in 1991.
The town rewards walking around before touring anything. The Museum of the Waxhaws sits just outside downtown as a regional history museum and a memorial to Andrew Jackson, who grew up in this area. Mule Barn Mercantile occupies the old W H Collins livery stable and keeps a blacksmith shop working on the first Saturday of each month. The Storefront Theatre stages reader’s theatre with no sets, costumes or props. And at Harvey Clay Nesbit Park, the Carolina Thread Trail runs about half a mile to a 180 foot suspension bridge that crosses into South Carolina on foot.
The tradeoff is the commute and the split in the housing stock. Waxhaw sits roughly twenty miles south of Charlotte and about three from the state line, and Uptown is a real drive rather than a short one. Beyond that, the town is genuinely two markets: historic and near downtown, where walkability is the product, and the newer master planned subdivisions further out, where it is not. Buyers relocating into the metro should decide which of those they are buying before comparing prices. Those weighing it as a move-up purchase often also look at Marvin for land and Weddington for lot size.
