What holds it together is the civic calendar and the parks. Crooked Creek Park carries an inclusive playground, a splash pad, a dog park and a disc golf course cut through wooded creek terrain. Chestnut Square Park is the organized side of it, with a turf multiuse field, tennis and sand volleyball courts, a walking track and a boardwalk over the stormwater pond. Crossing Paths Park, the first town park, keeps an amphitheater near the old center. Family Fun Day fills Crooked Creek with rides, food trucks and fireworks, and the July Fourth parade turns Indian Trail Road into the town square for a morning. The tradeoff is traffic and distance. US 74 is the commercial spine and it carries the commute, while the tolled Monroe Expressway buys predictability for a fee. The CATS 74X runs weekday service to Uptown from the Union Towne Center park and ride, which is a genuine option most Union County towns do not have. Buyers relocating into the Charlotte metro should drive their actual route at their actual hour rather than trusting the mileage. Those treating it as a move-up purchase usually compare it against Matthews for a real downtown and Waxhaw for newer housing at a higher price.
