Concord is known for the Speedway, and that is fair, because Charlotte Motor Speedway is inside the city limits and so are the shops and headquarters of a long list of professional race teams. What that means day to day is less about race weekends and more about the fact that a real industry lives here. The pit crew who works down the road is your neighbor. The barbecue everyone sends you to, The Smoke Pit, was opened by a guy who retired from NASCAR and started a butcher shop first.
The part that surprises people is downtown. Union Street is genuinely walkable, lined with independent restaurants and shops around the old Greek Revival courthouse, which now holds the Concord Museum and the Davis Theatre, a small room that books jazz and Americana. There is a social district, so you can carry a drink between places. A few minutes away, Gibson Mill turned a former textile plant into a food hall, two of the city’s first craft breweries, a classic car showroom and the largest antique mall in the South. Concord Mills sits on the other side of I-85 with more than two hundred stores, an aquarium and a go-kart track. That is a lot of range for one city.
The tradeoff is that Concord is not one place to live. A mill era cottage two blocks off Union Street, a nineties subdivision off Concord Parkway and a new build out toward Cox Mill are three different lifestyles at three different prices, and they are not competing for the same buyer. Deciding which side of the city you want comes before deciding on a house. If you are relocating into the Charlotte metro, it is also worth walking downtown before you tour anything, because it either lands for you or it does not. Buyers weighing the wider county usually also look at Harrisburg for its parks and Kannapolis for its ballpark and research campus, and those treating this as a move-up purchase should price the three Concords separately rather than against a citywide median.
